Clear scope, the right process and direct communication help keep custom work practical from the first conversation through fabrication and field work.
Steel
Carbon and mild steel are common fabrication materials because they are strong, widely available and well suited to structural, commercial and general custom work. When exposed to weather or corrosive conditions, the chosen coating or finish becomes important.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is selected when corrosion resistance, cleanability or appearance is important. Grade and finish matter, and the fabrication process needs to preserve the characteristics expected from the material.
Aluminum
Aluminum is much lighter than steel and naturally corrosion resistant in many environments. It behaves differently during welding and fabrication, so designs that work in steel are not always copied directly into aluminum.
Let the application drive the decision
The right question is not which metal is best in general; it is which material is best for the load, environment, appearance, fabrication requirements and budget of the specific project.
